Why is OpenAI a potential problem and what can us puny mortals do to contribute to a solution?
OpenAI’s “Chat GPT” has become the most well known of Large Language Models (LLMs). By the way, it isn’t the best. I have a beef or two with OpenAI. Well, many beefs, but I’ll stick to two that I consider important:
(1) Trust. In their initial money-seeking phase, they promised to be open source. As soon as they had the money they needed, they changed that tune. They never open sourced their code.
(2) Regulatory capture. They have been pushing hard at government to regulate the entire AI industry using regulatory restrictions that are provided by OpenAI and – coincidentally – make it extremely difficult for new scrappy poor competitors to get into the market or providing potentially cheaper/better AIs.
Regulatory capture is not new but that doesn’t make it good. It’s actually at the root of most of our Country’s (and many other Countrys’) problems. It’s the easiest and most-used method for a corporation to attain monopoly power; bribing- I mean- lobbying government officials and/or agencies to adopt their regulation or other directives. It’s a big part of why we are involved in so many wars.
Example: Boeing Lockheed-Martin or Raytheon or insert-weapons-mfgr-name-here bribes- I mean- lobbies congress to make war and the rest is history.
Example: Pfizer lobbies congress to mandate… I think ya’ll get the point now.
What can you do to help? Instead of using a Chat GPT model, use:
– Anthropic’s https://Claude.ai
– xAI’s https://Grok.com
– Goofle’s https://aistudio.google.com
or Meta’s open source Llama or the new open source Deepseek.
All of these have a free mode. If you really want to save money, bounce between using all or most of those, bouncing every time one says, “Sorry you used up your free credits for the day.”
Side note: OpenAI is building/promoting a special kind of crypto and global digital ID system that I consider a potentially huge violation of privacy.
Side note 2: All the AI companies / models I mentioned above are consistently neck & neck in AI “intelligence” benchmarks. So one day, Grok may be the smartest and the next day Claude is, etc.
Best outcome… For more of this kind of speculation about the near future:
